The WBS Knights were formed in 2007 to build a stronger youth hockey presence in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Exposure to professional hockey in the region as home to the AHL Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins provided the perfect platform to which the Knights program could begin to grow. The Knights organization quickly became a new arena for local young athletes to develop and compete within the USA Hockey format. From day one, the Knight's mission was to cultivate and field teams to participate at the highest levels throughout the US and Canada. In 2009 the Knights youth program reached this goal by earning USA Hockey Tier I status.

The Knights have a rich history of further developing high-level players through their Academy model by recruiting from all over the world. Since 2007, the Knights have been a structured home away from home for players from as far away as Italy, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, Prague, Finland, and Canada.

The Knights have produced NHL players Ivan Provorov – Philadelphia Flyers (NHL Draft 2015, 1st Round, 7th Overall), Denis Smirnov – Colorado Avalanche (NHL Draft 2017, 6th Round, 156th Overall), CJ Yakimowicz – St. Louis Blues (NHL Draft 2014, 6th Round, 172nd Overall), Nikita Pavlychev – Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL Draft 2015, 7th Round, 197th Overall), and Dmitri Zaitsev – Washington Capitals (NHL Draft 2016, 7th Round, 207th Overall).

The Knights have sent 74 players to continue their playing careers at Division I colleges and universities, including Big Ten, Ivy League, and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, and 154 players to continue their playing careers at Division III colleges and universities.

Throughout the 2012-2014 hockey seasons, the Knights competed in the USA Hockey National Championship and won the National Championship with the Bantam Major AAA in 2012. Since then, Knights teams have consistently been ranked in the top 15 in the country.
